2019 was a particular solid year for film with clear standouts in acting performance and other awards categories. Of course, everyone has their list of snubs – those who didn’t win and/or missed the nomination completely. In our opinion, the year’s biggest awards season snub belongs to Waves. This contemporary drama hit theaters in mid-November, but seemingly fly under the radar of audiences, the press, and the Academy. Waves, directed by Trey Edward Shultz, tracks the life of the Williams, an upper-middle class family of four living in South Floridian suburbs during a particularly turbulent time for the elder child, Tyler (Kelvin…

If you’re a skateboarder, there’s a huge chance you’ve played a skateboarding video game.  Heck, even if you’re not a skateboarder, you’ve likely played one or two at some point in your life.  What you might not know is that skateboarding has been in video games for a LONG time.  Here’s a look at just some of the many skateboarding video games and arcade games that have been released over the past few decades: 720° – Arcade game by Atari, 1986 Perhaps the start of it all, 720 Degrees was an arcade game by Atari.  Named after the trick, which…

You’ve shopping for a new complete skateboard, either for yourself or as a gift.  You’ve chosen a deck, a pair of trucks, and a set of wheels. The last major decision you need to make about your skateboard setup is the bearings. The decision doesn’t need to be complicated, however.  Let us walk you through the different factors for choosing the right skateboard bearings. Size Fortunately, all skateboard bearings are the same width and diameter, so size isn’t something you’ll have to worry about.  Just for reference, skate bearings are a “608” bearing.  608 refers to the dimensions, so any…

The trailer for Fast & Furious 9 is hitting the internet on January 31st, with the full length film to follow on May 22nd. We thought we’d revisit the franchise and touch on why Tokyo Drift (2006), the black sheep of the Fast franchise, is actually the best of the bunch. This may be a hot take, but hear us out. It’s actually a Car Culture film The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift was the first and still is the most predominant drift car and rally car racing movie, whether you like it or not. If you were of…

This think piece contains Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker spoilers. It’s pretty unquestionable that Rose Tico is one of the least-liked characters in the sequel trilogy. She was introduced in The Last Jedi with a great amount of agency, yet is blamed for leading Finn on a meaningless side quest, being too overt about political causes, and preventing a heroic sacrifice (not to mention an uncalled for show of affection moments later). While fans loathed the Canto Bight scenes and seemingly untimely kiss with Finn during the battle of Crait, some took it too far and harassed Kelly Marie Tran…

The Critics Speak! It’s been nearly two weeks since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was released for general audiences and if you’re like us, you feel that you’ve had ample time to digest everything that was thrown at you in the film’s 144 minute run time. There’s no doubt the final phase of the “Skywalker Saga” (albeit likely not the final episodic film) covers a lot of ground at arguably (easily argued) the fastest pace in the Star Wars film universe.  We’re sure you’ve either read reviews, watched endless YouTube critiques, or have talked about it with friends. For…

Let me preface this Hustlers review by saying I was unfamiliar with the true story that it’s based on. While I’m completely aware of what triggered the 2008 recession and knowledgeable of it’s ramifications (I was an adult in the workforce when it occurred), I haven’t since heard of the story that Hustlers is based on. I considered this irrelevant for review purposes, or at least in the case of this review. In other words, I’m not rating Hustlers on how closely it aligned with the actual events. Hustlers follows Destiny (Constance Wu) as she takes up employment at the…

Code 8 is a 2019 Science Fiction film simultaneously released in theaters and on streaming. Robbie and Stephen Amell produced a short film of the same name in 2016 in hopes of garnering crowdfunding for a full length feature film through IndieGoGo. Inspired by what they saw, fans quickly helped the Amells (first cousins) surpass their target of $200,000. Principal photography for Code 8 began in June 2017, and according to Wikipedia, boasted a budget of over $29 million. End credits reveal that a variety of production companies and other groups were involved in financing. Jeff Chan is credited as…

Tony Hawk said it best: “I consider skateboarding an art form, a lifestyle and a sport. ‘Action sport’ would be the least offensive categorization.” There is no denying that skateboarding is a sport, as it’s constantly referenced as an “action” or “extreme” sport.  There is also no doubt in anyone’s minds that it’s a lifestyle.  Those who don’t skate might not understand it, but they usually acknowledge that skateboarders have a way of living that’s all their own. But why is skateboarding an art form?  Let’s get into it. Skateboarding Allows For Complete Creativity There are no rules.  What other…
